Characteristics of Fine Art Photography

The intention: Unlike commercial photography which focuses especially on sale, fine art photography focuses on creating works for art galleries and exhibitions.

Personal choices: Technical elements are consciously and purposefully chosen to achieve a specific effect, unlike, for example, spontaneous snapshots.

The concept: The photographer may create a series of photos telling a larger story, often supported by an ‘artist statement’ that clarifies the purpose of the project. 

High-quality finish: The definition 'fine art' is also used for the prints. A fine art print is a print on a very high-quality paperbase.

How to recognize and appreciate fine art photography requires both a high level of knowledge in photography and more than just a quick glance at the work.

Creative vision: The work is not just photography, but intended to touch and to provoke reflection, often through symbolism or abstraction. It is more than just a documentary representation.
